In December 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved. Independent states emerged, often collectively referred to as ‘former Soviet’—implying a political, more precisely, civilizational heritage. Georgia was one of these states and the first to attempt to free itself from that label.

The separation happened with a significant delay. It took twelve years for this country, torn apart by inter-ethnic conflicts and internal instability, to stand on its feet and firmly reject the renewed manifestations of the ‘former Soviet’ – bureaucracy, inefficiency, criminal oligarchy, and corruption.
