At the start of World War II, Germans deported many Armenian families who had taken refuge in Southern Russia and Western Ukraine after the genocide, sending them to Germany for forced labor. Thousands of Armenian soldiers from the Red Army were also captured. Soviet authorities suspected all soldiers and civilians who had been behind enemy lines of treason. After the war, about 5,000 displaced persons, including many Armenians, settled in Stuttgart’s Funker Kaserne barracks. From there, they moved to the United States, choosing not to return to the Soviet Union.
